View from my Window Seat

So I’m here at Woodlake in Houston where it’s a beautiful, sunny and peaceful day outside.

A little context here: Here is why I’m in Houston right now, if you didn't know already ;)

So everyone has been asking me why I’m here this early:

  1. I wanted to explore and see what Houston has to offer.
  2. I wanted to prep for my interviews, network and meet people at the pre-GHC events happening here
  3. And the most important reason of all, I wanted to recover from my jetlag.

The first few days were spent trying to get over my jet lag by not giving in to my compulsive need to sleep. #jetlagisreal

Duty Calls

I love the work that I do in college and even though it does get hectic at times, I just can’t stay away from it.

PaperKin

Thanks to Chandni Nair, Akshay Balakrishnan and Joel Vilanilam Zachariah PaperKin is running smoothly. This week we covered an article …. written by one of our finest writers in the team, Shreya Shankar. I’m looking forward to more beautiful articles in my absence.

Meanwhile, why don’t you check out what we have in store!

TEDxMEC

Preparations for TEDxMEC are going ahead in full swing. We have an array of amazing speakers coming in this year for our theme “Improvise, Adapt, Overcome” Led by the talented Sachin Jose, come experience the magic of TEDxMEC on Oct 21st at IMA House, Kaloor.

Rethink

I’m doing a bit of research for the next project at Rethink with help from SKG and Arya Murali. Really looking forward to putting together a good idea proposal document. Hopefully, I should be able to get it ready by before the weekend.

Furthermore, if you are a woman and you are interested in making the most of the opportunities before you, sign up at Rethink’s WIT program today. Rethink’s Women in Tech Learning Program is a 4-week learning program for female engineering students, designed to equip them to leverage the various Women in Tech opportunities.

Applications for Cohort 2 are now open.

Preparations

It’s placement season in college and everyone is all busy studying and getting their resumes in order. As for me, I’m still trying to figure out what I want and what path to take up. You can never predict the future, you can only prepare and hope for the best.

Furthermore, I’m still in that phase where I don’t know what it is that I want. I am really looking forward to the conference and hope that it will help me decide what my future and career are going to look like. The best part of it is how I’m going to meet a lot of amazing women in tech and connect with a lot of professionals from different aspects of the technology sector. Moreover, there is a lot of goodies and swag to bring home.

#realitycheck

So, last week, I had two phone interviews for roles that I was really interested in. I loved how the conversation proceeded, the recruiter was friendly but towards the end, they all just had one question — If I had work authorization to work in the U.S.A.

Now, I either had to be a citizen or I had to be a student in any one of the graduate programs in the state, but I was neither. Things were crystal clear now. Even if I did manage to get an interview and impress the recruiters, chances of getting it converted into a full-time offer were really slim. But, I have now made up my mind to give it all my best now that I’ve come all the way here to attend the conference. Besides, finding a job isn't all there is to life. Meeting people, making memories and getting a chance of a lifetime to visit the land of opportunities, you can’t quite put a price on that!

Moreover, there are a few companies which do sponsor work visas. Well..fingers crossed! Let’s hope for the best.

Academic Options

There are a lot of well known renowned colleges and universities coming in for the career fair and I’m equally excited to meet them and discuss options for further studies.

I had always thought I would work for a few years before I would pursue higher studies but now because of GHC, I’m beginning to consider all the opportunities before me with equal weight.

It’s amazing the possibilities GHC has to offer. I never in my dreams thought that one day I would actually get a chance to talk to alumni and staff from colleges like MIT, Caltech and Carnegie Mellon to name a few.

One thing is certain, I better do my fair share of research before I approach them. Who knows, the right attitude and the right question can get you places.

Another day. Another perspective.

Thank you —A Tale of Introspection and Exploration

My parents have been front-runners in making me do odd jobs and urging me to handle tricky situations, all on my own. I despised them for it, questioning their parenting skills, wondering if they ever did truly love me.

But after all this time, today, I realize why.

Read on to find out how you can change the status quo too:

WALMART

And yes, I did go to Walmart. It is huge, bigger than Lulu hypermarket if you are wondering. I also spent a considerable “sum” here. (*wink wink*)

Bonus Material

Since I call myself a scribomaniac, here is something I scribbled a few days ago, which I think speaks a whole lot of truth…
